Around six years after the Great Kanto Earthquake, construction of the Mitsui Main Building was completed in March 1929. This modern-style office building was built using the latest building technology at the time, based on the strong desire and will to “create a building that would not be destroyed, even if an earthquake twice the magnitude of the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred.” It came to be known as a symbol of reconstruction from the ruins and gave hope and vitality to peoples' hearts.

It is still being used as a banking space

For eighty years after its construction, the Mitsui Main Building continued to serve as a office building. It was designated as an important cultural property and underwent comprehensive development with the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower. An art museum was also established as a gathering place. As such, value has been constantly added to the Mitsui Main Building. We would like to increase its appeal and pass it on to future generations as the “Symbol of the Redevelopment of Nihonbashi.”
