Responding to the Great East Japan Earthquake

Here, we report on the situation of damage resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake (Tohoku district - off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake) of March 11, 2011, incurred by the Mitsui Fudosan Group as well as its responses.

Post-Earthquake Disaster Responses

With the occurrence of the earthquake, employees at our facilities followed procedures according to disaster response manuals, etc. ensuring that customers and others evacuate safely to the best of their abilities, as well as confirming building conditions, etc.
Also, Mitsui Fudosan quickly established a Disaster Response Office after the earthquake with the President as the Response Office Chief, deliberating on and implementing measures aimed at continuation and recovery of business based on BCP while collaborating with major group companies and collecting data concerning safety of employees and the situation of damage at offices, managed facilities, etc.

Damage of Facilities, etc. and Restoration Conditions, etc.

Significant conditions of damage and their restoration, as well as our support to the affected areas and responses to the lack of electricity supply, etc., is as follows.

Office Buildings

There was no major damage to the structures of office buildings managed and operated by Mitsui Fudosan, including those in the Tohoku district. Though affected by suspensions of elevators, etc., operations quickly returned to normal. There were no casualties at these properties.

Commercial Facilities

“LaLa garden Nagamachi” (Taihaku-ku, Sendai-shi) and Mitsui Outlet Park Sendai Port (Miyagino-ku, Sendai-shi) suspended operations due to the impact of the earthquake, but resumed operations in late April and late June, respectively. There was no major damage at most of the facilities in the Kanto region and operations resumed after safety was confirmed. There were no casualties at these properties.

For-Sale Condominiums and Detached Houses

There was no damage that stood out at properties which Mitsui Fudosan Residential Co., Ltd. is selling or building in the Tohoku region as well as the Tokyo metropolitan area. There were no casualties at these properties.

Support Activities for the Affected Areas

The Mitsui Fudosan Group responded as follows to support areas and residents affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and their residents.

Donation (Total of 130 million yen)

Mitsui Fudosan: 100 million yen
Mitsui Home Co., Ltd., Mitsui Real Estate Sales Co., Ltd. and Mitsui Fudosan Residential Co., Ltd.: 10 million yen each

Supplied Goods

Provided approximately 10 million yen worth of goods to affected areas such as food, sanitary products and daily necessities

Employee Donations

Donated approximately 2.5 million yen

In addition, fundraising activities were conducted at commercial facilities and hotels managed by the Mitsui Fudosan Group and presented as donations as described below.

Commercial Facilities (24 Facilities)

Donated: 8,899,834 yen
Implemented period: March 16 to May 8
*In addition to the above, an equivalent amount was also donated from facility revenues.

Tokyo Midtown

Donated: 5,487,986 yen (as of the end of September)
Implemented period: From March 15 and continuing

Mitsui Garden Hotels (All Hotels)

Donated: 1,047,479 yen (as of June 30)

Responses to Shortages of Electrical Supply

The Mitsui Fudosan Group has been implementing various electricity conservation measures at office buildings, commercial facilities, hotels, rental residences, etc. to address the shortage of electrical supply as a result of damage to power stations due to the earthquake. While implementing these measures we received the cooperation of tenant companies, facility visitors and others.

Examples of Electricity Conservation Initiatives at Facilities

  • Electricity conservation at common-use areas
    Reduced lighting, partial suspension of elevators, less lighting or suspension of neon signs, partial suspension of air conditioning and heat sources, etc.
  • Request for cooperation for electricity conservation at exclusive-use areas
    Reduced lighting, diligent turning off of lights, modest air conditioning temperature settings, diligent turning off of OA equipment, etc.
  • Shortening of operating hours at commercial facilities, etc.
