The Mitsui Fudosan Group’s Never-ending Forest Initiative

Biodiversity conservation and creation

Forest management that prioritizes biodiversity conservation & initiatives for the future

Forests are home to a diverse array of plants and animals. We are continuing the “never-ending forest” cycle by properly managing, cultivating, and using forests with the aim of conserving biodiversity.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity refers to the interconnected coexistence of diverse living things—including people, animals, plants, and insects—in a variety of environments. By protecting forests, we are striving to conserve ecosystems centered on trees and plants.

Group-owned forests include both natural forests and planted forests. Just under 40 percent of our forests are natural forests dominated by Mizunara oak and other tree species that are preserved in their natural state with minimal management. Meanwhile, just over 60 percent are planted forests dominated by Sakhalin fir and other trees species, which must be properly managed in order to maintain the health of the forest.
We are continuing the “never-ending forest” cycle through planned tree-planting, proper forest management and cultivation, and the utilization of wood from our forests in building materials and other purposes.

About 40% of Group-owned forests

Natural forests

Forests created by nature that support a wide variety of tree species. These forests are left in their natural state, without much human intervention.

About 60% of Group-owned forests

Planted forests

Forests made up of saplings planted by humans, predominantly coniferous trees. These forests require appropriate management by humans, such as underbrush clearing and pruning.

Membership in the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity

We are a member of the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity, a coalition of the willing that aims to conserve and protect at least 30 percent of Japan’s land and sea in order to halt and reverse biodiversity loss (i.e., be nature positive) by 2030.

Based on our philosophy of seeking to link diverse values, coexist in harmony with society, and achieve a sustainable society, we will aim for a society that enriches both people and the planet by continuing to foster social and economic development as well as conservation of the global environment.
