Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan - Hospitality Space to Be Launched on March 20

Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., together with land owners, is advancing the Nihonbashi Muromachi East District Development Project, a large-scale mixed-use redevelopment project covering five blocks. In conjunction with the opening of the retail properties COREDO Muromachi 2 (Muromachi Furukawa Mitsui Building) and COREDO Muromachi 3 (Muromachi Chibagin Mitsui Building), which constitute the second section of the project, Mitsui Fudosan will open a series of sites to communicate information for promoting enjoyment of the local area by Japanese visitors and overseas tourists while enhancing ability of the area to handle international needs. These new initiatives are intended to help revitalize and revive the energy of the Nihonbashi area.
(1)Japanese-Style Rooms and Tea Rooms “Kyoraku TEI” and “Meguri AN” (3F, COREDO Muromachi 3)
The 8-tatami mat tea room Kyoraku TEI and 31.5-tatami mat hall Meguri AN are the first authentic Japanese-style rooms to be provided as rental spaces at a shopping center in Japan. The facilities can be used by local residents to host tea parties and various events, and are also to be used to promote a new “Nihonbashi Style” by serving as a space for Japanese visitors and overseas tourists to enjoy Nihonbashi by trying out traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and kimonos in an fun way. Moreover, the facilities can serve as a point to communicate information about Nihonbashi internationally, highlighting the appeal of the area and its history and culture, by coordinating with various local events, such as kimono events.
(2)Additional Floor Space to Open in the Nihonbashi Information Center (BF1, COREDO Muromachi)
The Nihonbashi Information Center opened in 2010, and will now increase its floor space to enhance services for overseas visitors, communication of information about the Nihonbashi area, and sales of products from traditional older stores and well-known local stores. English-speaking staff will serve as Nihonbashi Concierges to provide information about the area. Visitors to the center will find a giant 2.6 m x 3.0 m wall map showing new ways to enjoy Nihonbashi and recommended seasonal attractions. Other features include free Wi-Fi, a café, and other useful functions as a base for strolling around the area. The facility will be reborn as Nihonbashi’s new rendezvous point.

Additional Functions, Services, and Others
Nihonbashi CONCIERGE
The center provides general information about COREDO Muromachi, but also operates an information counter for the Nihonbashi Omotenashi program. The counter is attended by full-time concierges who provide information about traditional older stores, sightseeing spots, events and festivals, and routes for strolling around the area. Guidance is also offered in English for overseas tourists.
Nihonbashi Wall Map
This giant 2.6 m x 3.0 m wall map provides clear information on events and recommended spots in the Nihonbashi area. The information includes seasonal events and spots recommended by locals, and is provided in coordination with the groups that have deep knowledge of the Nihonbashi area, such as the editing department of Nihonbashi Goyomi*1 and the NPO Nihonbashi Friend*2.
*1 Nihonbashi Goyomi
A free newspaper offering information about the Nihonbashi area, including local seasonal festivals and events. Designed to serve as a tool to help visitors enjoy different spots in the area, the publication also carries features on seasonal topics, local specialty items, and interviews with the operators of traditional older stores.

*2 NPO Nihonbashi Friend
Nihonbashi Friend was established as an NPO in 2013 with the objective of revitalizing the area of Nihonbashi in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward. The NPO is working to build up a network for people working in Nihonbashi, and to plan events to revitalize the area in coordination with local businesses and residents. The main activity is the Asage Nihonbashi exchange meeting held on in the morning of the third Friday of each month. Each time, two guests are invited from the new and old generations of the town to speak on the theme of “Nihonbashi’s Next 100 Years.”
Nihonbashi TAKUMI SHOP
The Nihonbashi TAKUMI SHOP introduces the refined artisanship of Nihonbashi’s traditional older stores and well-known stores, and sells their products. There are also plans to develop a selection of exclusive Nihonbashi products and a range of products developed in collaboration between Nihonbashi’s traditional older stores, well-known local stores, the stores of COREDO Muromachi, and creators and designers.
Nihonbashi IPPIN CAFÉ
A café offering patrons an easy selection of specialty goods from Nihonbashi’s traditional older stores and well-known local stores, as well as original drinks and desserts developed through collaborations. The café will also offer limited-period products introduced in regular column planned for Nihonbashi Goyomi called “The Nihonbashi Specialty Products Picture Guide”.
Nihonbashi MULTIP-ROOM
This is a multi-purpose space that can be used for hosting workshops, mini-events, or other functions. The room will house books and magazines about Nihonbashi, and be available for casual use as a café lounge.
