Tokyo, Japan, February 21, 2019— Jokyoji Temple Religious Corporation, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., a leading global real estate company headquartered in Tokyo, and Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management Co., Ltd. announced today that they started construction on the Kyoto Jokyoji Hotel Project (tentative name) in Teianmaenocho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City on February 15.

This project calls for construction of a new multi-use building integrating Jokyoji Temple and a hotel (with a total of 167 rooms (planned)) on land owned by Jokyoji. Upon completion, Mitsui Fudosan will lease the hotel portion, which will be managed by Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management. The hotel is scheduled to open in fall 2020.

Jokyoji has a long history, dating back to its foundation by Taira no Shigemori (1138-1179), granting of the name Jokyoji by Emperor Go-Hanazono (1419-1471) in 1449 and relocating to its current location in Teramachi-dori in 1591 with the reorganization of temples within Kyoto carried out by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) in 1591. This project is being carried out to rebuild aged structures by integrating development of the temple and a hotel.

The project site is extremely convenient for tourism and leisure with outstanding access to public transport, being 1 minute on foot from Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Koto Main Line, 7 minutes on foot from Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line, and within walking distance of the Shijo Kawaramachi and Ponto-cho districts that make a stay in Kyoto so satisfying by day and night.
This property will be a rare multi-use building incorporating a hotel and temple (occupying the first floor), and will be the Mitsui Fudosan Group’s first hotel operation business with such an arrangement.
The Mitsui Fudosan Group will continue to provide guests from Japan and abroad with special accommodation experiences utilizing features such as these in its hotel operations.
Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management currently operates 6,703 rooms in 26 facilities throughout Japan under Mitsui Garden Hotels, its upper middle-class lodging-focused hotel brand, and THE CELESTINE HOTELS, its high-class lodging-focused hotel brand.

The planned hotel will be the seventh that Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management will operate in Kyoto, together with Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei, HOTEL THE CELESTINE KYOTO GION, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Station Front (tentative name, scheduled to open on August 29, 2019), and Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Gojo Karasumacho (tentative name, currently under development and scheduled to open in the summer of 2020).

Going forward, the Mitsui Fudosan Group will actively engage in new developments in the Tokyo metropolitan area and main regional cities throughout Japan.
