Tokyo, Japan, June 22, 2020 - Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., a leading global real estate company headquartered in Tokyo, and National Cancer Center Japan (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Hitoshi Nakagama: hereinafter “NCC”) concluded a fixed-term land lease contract for commercial use on May 27. Under this contract, NCC will lease a part of the grounds of the National Cancer Center Hospital East (Location: 6-5-1 Kashiwa-no-ha, Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture; Director: Atsushi Ohtsu, M.D., Ph.D.; hereinafter “NCC Hospital East”) to Mitsui Fudosan, to develop an accommodation facility for the convenience of cancer patients and their accompanying family members and creating a new clinical model in the Kashiwa-no-ha area of Chiba Prefecture.

■ A hospital-linked accommodation facility supporting regular outpatient treatments and hospitalization for many patients and assist their family members

NCC Hospital East, one of the leading specialized cancer hospitals in Japan, treats nearly 300,000 cancer patients a year from not only the Kashiwa-no-ha area and surrounding districts, but also from all corners of Japan nationwide and overseas. It also hosts large numbers of medical professionals, researchers, and others on a constant basis. Notably, in cases where patients must undergo regular outpatient treatments for a certain period of time, such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy, regularly traveling to and from the hospital from home afar can impose a large physical burden on patients. For this reason, there was a need for a facility close to the hospital where these patients could stay overnight or for longer periods.

NCC and Mitsui Fudosan have decided to develop a hospital-linked accommodation facility on the premises of NCC Hospital East, in order to meet the needs of visitors and improve convenience. The facility plans around 140 guestrooms. Larger guestrooms housing patients with company, and thosefitted with kitchens, electric appliances and other amenities for medium- and long-term residents are planned. In coordination with NCC Hospital East, the facility plans to provide emergency responses and consultations, and put in place a framework to support those going through medical treatment as theywork. NCC and Mitsui Fudosan will also work closely together to offer other relative services to assist cancer patients and family members.

■ Create a new clinical model by harnessing 5G, IT and other technologies

In June 2019, NCC and Mitsui Fudosan concluded a basic agreement for cooperation and collaboration on development of next-generation medical technologies and healthcare services. Under this agreement, NCC and Mitsui Fudosan have been working to establish a life science center to conquer and cure cancer. With plans to deploy new communications infrastructure such as 5G, the facility will be used as a testing ground for sensing devices and other technologies that assist with the health management of guests, with the goal of enabling telemedicine and home healthcare. Through these and other initiatives, NCC and Mitsui Fudosan will seek to create a new clinical model.

■ Create “A New Model for Hospitals and Neighborhoods” through the Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City

Located in Chiba Prefecture’s Kashiwa-no-ha area, which is home to the NCC Hospital East, the Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City seeks to develop a community solving problems of the future based on compatibility with preserving the environment, health and longevity, and the creation of new industries. NCC Hospital East has been conducting innovative research utilizing IT and other technologies, with the aim of developing new cancer treatments and clinical approaches. In order to promote open innovation in the form of private-public-academia partnership, Mitsui Fudosan has conducted initiatives such as Innovation Field Kashiwa-no-ha to accelerate demonstration projects with private companies, and Kashiwa-no-ha IoT Business Co-creation Lab, which seeks to drive widespread adoption and use of IoT and to create opportunities for IoT-related businesses. In 2019, Mitsui Fudosan, Kashiwa City, and other partners initiated the Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City Consortium. The consortium is working to build a data platform that links data from the private and public sectors and to create new applications and services based on the analysis and use of this data. NCC Hospital East is also engaged in coordination and collaboration on these initiatives as one of the consortium’s participants.
