SEVEN-ELEVEN JAPAN CO., LTD. (hereinafter “SEVEN-ELEVEN JAPAN”), Ito-Yokado Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Ito-Yokado”), Mitsui Fudosan Residential Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Mitsui Fudosan Residential”), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (hereinafter “SMBC”), YOSHIKAWAYUSHI Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “YOSHIKAWAYUSHI”), NOMURA JIMUSHO, INC., (hereinafter “NOMURA JIMUSHO”), and ENEOS Corporation (hereinafter “ENEOS”), announced on January 15, 2025 that the seven companies will jointly promote a supply-chain building project to promote the recovery of household waste cooking oil and introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using supermarkets, convenience stores, and large-scale condominiums (residential areas) in Chiba Prefecture as bases (hereinafter, the “Project”).
The Project is a proposal for a collaborative scheme by the seven companies that was adopted by the Chiba Prefecture Policy and Planning Department in its call for applications for an “SAF Introduction Promotion Project Using Local Resources in Chiba.” It is the first trial project in Japan to involve collaboration with local government for the creation of an SAF supply chain using household waste cooking oil at convenience stores and in residential areas.
Waste oil is a valuable resource that can be used as raw material for biofuel (SAF, biodiesel, etc.). Currently Japan generates around 100,000 tons of household waste cooking oil per year, and most of this is discarded as combustible waste and not reused.
The Project is intended to promote the following principles:
- resource recycling (utilizing resources that are currently being discarded, such as household waste cooking oil, as much as possible)
- community contribution (promoting Narita International Airport to the international community as a hub airport for Asia), and
- the future (drawing on the knowledge of each company to take on new challenges to leave a comfortable planet for future generations).
Specifically, household waste cooking oil will be collected in Chiba Prefecture from 7-Eleven, Ito-Yokado, and York Mart stores and a large-scale condominium developed by Mitsui Fudosan Residential. The demonstration project will promote use of the oil initially in the manufacture of products such as biodiesel. In the future, the goal is to build a supply chain in which ENEOS will utilize the collected waste oil as raw material for the manufacture of SAF to be supplied to Narita International Airport.
Looking ahead, the seven companies will build a resource recycling model for household waste cooking oil with support from Chiba Prefecture, aiming to realize the building of a supply chain to promote the introduction of SAF.
