■HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE Overview
Since opening HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO on November 3, 2020, HOTEL THE MITSUI has, under its brand concept “Embracing Japan’s Beauty,” cherished the uniquely Japanese beauty found in traditional culture, architecture, crafts, and cuisine, offering every guest a special experience and a sense of relaxation through attentive care and refined hospitality. This hotel carries on that concept, making the most of Hakone’s blessed natural surroundings to deliver world-class facilities and service.
The hotel is located within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The expansive site of approximately 14 hectares has an elevation change of about 45 meters, and on the Mount Sengen side south of the Jakotsu River, a primeval forest has been left untouched. The design takes full advantage of the rich natural setting and terrain, passing on the natural environment nurtured by this land to future generations. As guests ascend the greenery-lined approach, they leave the surrounding bustle behind and are welcomed by an entrance crowned with a grand roof. Passing beneath it, the majestic view of Mount Sengen is revealed, setting the stage for a special stay at one with nature.
The interior design is handled by the world-renowned design firm Yabu Pushelberg. Its spatial design, attuned to harmony with nature, creates a refined and open environment for the guests.
All 126 guest rooms feature natural hot springs, and the hotel offers a variety of facilities, including restaurants, the Thermal Spring, a spa, and SHIKI-AN. Through Hakone’s nature, cuisine, hot springs, and culture, it delivers a resort experience that nourishes both body and mind.

■ Thermal Spring SPA Overview
Differing in character from the Thermal Spring at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, which lies underground in the city of Kyoto, this open-air Thermal Spring lets guests enjoy natural hot spring water both indoors and outdoors. With the majestic view of Mount Sengen before them and the murmur of the Jakotsu River in their ears, guests find themselves in a space where sky, forest, and water become one. The indoor and outdoor areas each offer their own distinct appeal for a special, healing wellness experience.
The spa, with its five treatment rooms, including one couples room, offers menus created exclusively for the hotel.
Under the concept of “surrendering to serene stillness,” guests are enveloped in the quiet of the forest, breathing with it and immersing themselves in nature for a moment of rest for both body and mind.

■Restaurant Overview
The Executive Chef is Hiroshi Takahashi, whose career includes serving as Executive Sous Chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo and Executive Chef at Halekulani Okinawa. At the specialty Japanese restaurant Sankei, the all-day dining venue RIVERINE, and The Bar LAMBENT, he presents dishes that make the most of local ingredients from Hakone and beyond. Guests can dine on the open terrace or in indoor seating areas oriented toward the outdoors, allowing the rich natural surroundings to be taken in.
Japanese Restaurant Sankei
Set in a space framed by the old-growth forest beyond the windows and by soft bamboo craftwork evoking the bamboo groves of Hakone, Sankei offers three dining styles: kaiseki, sushi, and teppanyaki.
The Head Chef is Hiroyuki Kurosu, whose track record includes earning one Michelin star for three consecutive years. Guided by the philosophy of shindo fuji*2, with the natural landscape of Hakone as its motif, he uses carefully chosen seasonal ingredients from local areas and across Japan, allowing guests to savor the seasonal bounty of nature through the artistry of skilled craftsmen.
*2 Shindo fuji is a term rooted in a Buddhist teaching that the body and the environment that surrounds it are inseparable and originally one. Here it is used to mean that eating local, seasonal ingredients brings us into harmony with nature and the environment.

All-Day Dining RIVERINE
At RIVERINE, guests can enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by nature while viewing Mount Sengen from indoor seating in a calm, residential-style space or from open-air terrace seating. The name RIVERINE evokes a landscape that follows the flow of a river and expresses the wish to offer a place where guests can enjoy rich flavors while time passes leisurely by like the gentle current of a stream. Built around the concepts of local production for local consumption and food sustainability, its lively show kitchen uses seafood from Sagami Bay and seasonal ingredients. Breakfast is served buffet style, and dinner features grilled dishes that draw out the natural flavors of each ingredient.

The Bar LAMBENT
At The Bar LAMBENT, soft light glows faintly in the evening, and guests can enjoy the changing seasons—cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall.
Amid walls covered with art connecting Kyoto, Hakone, and Nihonbashi on the theme of the Tokaido, and under soft, warm lighting, the bar serves a selection of premium Japanese whiskies and signature cocktails.

■Other Facilities
SHIKI-AN
Deeper within the grounds, SHIKI-AN stands quietly, as if cradled by the forest. The overall construction was carried out by Kyoto’s Yasuimoku Koumuten*3, which has also worked on the preservation of Katsura Imperial Villa and the construction of the Kyoto State Guest House. Built partly from lumber and other materials from the grounds, it is a traditional sukiya-style space. Here, guests can enjoy a distinctly Japanese moment, such as a tea gathering, while taking in the changing of the seasons.
*3 In addition to its work on Katsura Imperial Villa and the Kyoto State Guest House, Yasuimoku Koumuten also recreated the Shiki-no-Ma room at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO.

Function Room
The hotel offers an open, airy function room with a garden and terrace, where guests can spend time surrounded by the nature of each season.
In this calm space with views of the outdoors, the room can be used for a wide range of purposes, from group banquets to corporate offsite meetings.

Walking Paths on the Grounds and the Natural Scenic Areas Nearby
The walking paths on the hotel grounds include a terrace deck set along the banks of the Jakotsu River and a yoga terrace surrounded by trees—a nature retreat that lets guests experience every corner of the expansive site.
Nearby, guests can also enjoy the rich nature of Hakone town, including the popular Mount Sengen trekking course and Chisuji Falls, known for its sculptural beauty brought alive by thousands of fine streams of water trickling down a face of volcanic rock 20 meters wide and 3 meters high.
Through dappled sunlight, the murmur of water, and the scents of forest and earth, the hotel offers a relaxation experience that draws on the rich natural environment of Hakone.

< Comment from General Manager Manabu Kusui >
We are truly delighted that the HOTEL THE MITSUI brand will have Hakone as its new stage. Based on the extensive track record we have cultivated in Kyoto and the recognition we have received from around the world, we will further elevate our brand concept of “Embracing Japan’s Beauty” in Hakone, as we aim to create a hotel that will be loved for many years to come by our guests, our partner companies, our hotel staff, and the local community. With deep respect for the rich nature and history of Hakone, we will create new value unique to this place and deliver memorable experiences that can only be found at HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE. On behalf of the entire staff, I sincerely look forward to welcoming you on December 15.

< Comment from Executive Chef Hiroshi Takahashi >
I believe that cuisine is not confined to a single plate—it is an experience that encompasses space, time, and every aspect of hospitality. Guided by that conviction, I make a point of visiting producers and artisans in person, not only for ingredients but also for tableware and cutlery, choosing each one carefully while connecting with the thoughts and stories that live within them. In Hakone, a place where a long history and culture live on, I want to take on the challenge of creating a new dining experience unlike any known before and to share cuisine that can be savored only here, not only within Japan but with the wider world.

■ About the Mitsui Fudosan Group’s Hotel and Resort Business
Under the concept “Hospitality and Beyond,” the Mitsui Fudosan Group’s hotel and resort business aims to go beyond being a mere travel destination and create moments that enrich guests’ lives, working to build hotels and resorts where the staff who welcome guests share in that same joy and happiness.
In its accommodation-focused hotel business, the Group operates Mitsui Garden Hotels, The Celestine Hotels, and “sequence” nationwide. Drawing on the wish to offer a stay as rich and refreshing as a garden, Mitsui Garden Hotels has adopted the brand tagline “Stay in the Garden” and runs 34 properties in Japan and abroad. The Celestine Hotels, destination hotels where the stay itself becomes the purpose of the trip, comprises three properties, and “sequence,” a next-generation lifestyle hotel for enjoying free time and spending it on one’s own terms, comprises three properties.
In its resort and luxury business, the Group develops and attracts internationally acclaimed hotels in Japan and abroad, making the most of the natural surroundings and local character of each location. Halekulani Okinawa and HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO have earned Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide for five consecutive years since 2022. In addition, HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, Amanemu, Bvlgari Hotel Tokyo, and Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi have also earned Three MICHELIN Keys.

■HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE’s Environmental Initiatives
To stay close to Hakone’s rich natural environment and carry its value into the future, the hotel is advancing environmentally conscious initiatives. It has introduced a heat-exchange system that harnesses the thermal energy of the ground’s hot springs, putting it to effective use as energy within the hotel, and it has minimized alteration of the land by arranging the buildings to follow the site’s varied terrain. The plan also seeks harmony with the natural environment by making use of and transplanting existing trees wherever possible.
■ Sustainability in the Mitsui Fudosan Group
Based on the meaning of its “& mark,” “to generate new value with society through cooperation, coexistence and co-creation, we forge ahead, innovating,” the Mitsui Fudosan Group views the “creation of social value” and the “creation of economic value” as two wheels of a cart. Accordingly, we believe that the creation of social value leads to the creation of economic value, and that this economic value then creates even greater social value.
Moreover, we identified six Group Materiality priority issues when formulating our new management philosophy in April 2024. These Group Materiality priority issues are (1) Contribute to industrial competitiveness, (2) Coexist with the environment, (3) Health and Vitality, (4) Safety and security, (5) Diversity and inclusion, and (6) Compliance and governance. The Mitsui Fudosan Group will work to address each of the materialities through its core business activities and contribute to the promotion of sustainability.

Furthermore, in April 2025, the Mitsui Fudosan Group formulated “& EARTH for Nature,” its declaration of coexistence with the environment in neighborhood creation. Seeing the environment as a “Holistic Environment” blending nature, people, and community into a cohesive whole, the Group is promoting neighborhood creation that expands prosperous “Holistic Environments” and passes them on to future generations. In the Declaration, five key issues to address have been established: Preserve and nurture greenery, Harness the allure of water, Enrich the ecosystem, Connect the aspirations of the community, and Promote the circulation of natural resources. The initiatives described in this news release contribute to two of the key issues to address in “& EARTH for Nature.”
