On May 31, 2019, Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. signed a project agreement with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for the Qualified Project Etc. for Kumamoto Airport Operation. Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. is funded by the MSJA-Kumamoto Consortium, a consortium represented by Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. and comprising Kyushu Electric Power Co., Ltd.; Kyushu Industrial Transportation Holdings Co., Ltd.; Kumamoto Telecasting Co., Ltd.; Saishunkan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.; Kyushu Sanko Unyu Co., Ltd.; Sojitz Corporation, Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd.; The Sankei Building Co., Ltd.; ANA HOLDINGS INC.; and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd.

The new international/domestic passenger terminal at Kumamoto Airport has been positioned as “a symbol of Kumamoto’s recovery following the earthquake.” As such, Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. has been steadily working to create a terminal which embodies this concept. The new terminal is scheduled to open for service in 2023. Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. will ensure the facilities are sturdy enough to ensure passengers’ safety and peace of mind in the event of an accident, as well as introduce Japan’s first Multi-purpose Traveller’s Reception Area and the latest fast travel technologies. The company will also set up a shopping area open to the local community (complete with a special market space dedicated to Kumamoto food and travel) and a lively public square. In this way, they hope to provide a space to foster engagement between visitors to Kumamoto and the local community.

Additionally, Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. will connect the airport to a diverse airport network encompassing many countries and regions, primarily in East Asia. By constructing the best international flight network of any local airport in Japan, Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. will work to make the airport the central gateway between Kyushu and the rest of the world. In this way, the company will help Kumamoto’s constructive recovery by achieving its goals of 17 international flights and an annual 6.22 million passengers, fostering greater international exchange and revitalizing both Kumamoto Airport and the surrounding area.

Going forward, Kyushu Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. will continue gearing up to take over airport operations, scheduled to begin April 1, 2020. For more information about this project, see the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism homepage:
