NEMU RESORT, located within Ise-Shima National Park in Mie Prefecture, is a vast resort spanning approximately 250 ha (roughly 61 times the size of Tokyo Dome). 4. Redevelopment of the Satoyama Waterside Garden into a Water Environment that Encourages Reflection on Coexistence with the Natural Environment Through Interaction with Nature

Mitsui Fudosan has long worked to restore the forest environment through initiatives such as planting more than 10,000 new trees as part of new developments on the property, creating an environment befitting a national park. Within NEMU RESORT, Mitsui Fudosan has also promoted environmental initiatives in collaboration with local authorities, including reopening the sluice gate of Niu no Ike within the grounds to restore the mudflats. The resulting recovery of biodiversity has helped improve the fishing environment of Ago Bay. As part of this renovation, the Satoyama Waterside Garden will be redeveloped to restore a diverse waterside ecosystem and create a space where guests can interact with the area’s abundant natural surroundings.

About Water Circulation within NEMU RESORT and the Use of the Satoyama Waterside Garden

At NEMU RESORT, part of the water used within the resort is secured through on-site reservoirs, and the wastewater generated is purified and then released into the Satoyama Waterside Garden. Through this system, the resort promotes circular use of water resources.

Developed in fiscal 2012, the Satoyama Waterside Garden supports this water circulation system while also serving as a place where guests can experience the diverse natural environment of satoyama (countryside) woodlands and waterside ecosystems. Visitors can enjoy the seasonal rhythms of nature up close—such as the songs of bush warblers in spring, the glow of fireflies in summer, the ripening of acorns in autumn, and the sight of ducks in winter. At Niu Pond, which sits downstream of the Satoyama Waterside Garden, the restoration of mudflats has led to confirmed sightings of various wildlife throughout the year, including mullet, black sea bream, kingfishers, ducks, Japanese rice fish, and rhinoceros beetles.

Following the renovation, the resort plans to introduce programs such as nature observation and environmental learning, allowing guests to encounter creatures they would rarely see in daily life and to experience the many facets of satoyama nature. As guests stroll along gentle streams and ponds, the resort will also provide opportunities to reflect on coexistence with the natural environment while feeling the vitality of nature.

Sustainability in the Mitsui Fudosan Group

Based on the meaning of its “& mark,” “to generate new value with society through cooperation, coexistence and co-creation, we forge ahead, innovating,” the Mitsui Fudosan Group views the “creation of social value” and the “creation of economic value” as two wheels of a cart. Accordingly, we believe that the creation of social value leads to the creation of economic value, and that this economic value then creates even greater social value.

Moreover, we identified six Group Materiality priority issues when formulating our new management philosophy in April 2024. These Group Materiality priority issues are (1) Contribute to industrial competitiveness, (2) Coexist with the environment, (3) Health and Vitality, (4) Safety and security, (5) Diversity and inclusion, and (6) Compliance and governance. The Mitsui Fudosan Group will work to address each of the materialities through its core business activities and contribute to the promotion of sustainability.

Furthermore, in April 2025, the Mitsui Fudosan Group formulated “& EARTH for Nature,” its declaration of coexistence with the environment in neighborhood creation. Seeing the environment as a “Holistic Environment” blending nature, people, and community into a cohesive whole, the Group is promoting neighborhood creation that expands prosperous “Holistic Environments” and passes them on to future generations. In the Declaration, five key issues to address have been established: Preserve and nurture greenery, Harness the allure of water, Enrich the ecosystem, Connect the aspirations of the community, and Promote the circulation of natural resources. The initiatives described in this news release contribute to 5 of the key issues to address in “& EARTH for Nature.”
